Physics Question – The Tacoma Narrows Bridge

Most of us would have seen the video of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The bridge sways wildly in the wind and then a major portion of it, breaks and falls into the water below…

What is the phenomenon that caused this?

The answer is NOT Resonance. It failed due to something called Aeroelastic Flutter. You can find a detailed description on the Tacoma Bridge page! A scientific paper can be found here…

I also thought that resonance caused the bridge collapse until afternoon today. I was designing a logo for Resonance and decided to do some reading on the topic. That was when I found out…

PS: Resonance is an initiative at work.
