Human nature does not always mean reflection alone! Why are you assuming that? Curiosity is part of human nature. Lot of times, it is 'curiosity' that differentiates living from the dead ;)
Why do you expect people to have different views in different places?

Let us take 5 incidents,
1. In a road, you see a hoarding in the middle of all other hoardings which looks like 3D display. What will you do?

2. You see a coconut tree with branches. What will you do?

3. You see a girl who is so beautiful. What will you do?

4. You see a dog going in a artificial legs "the wheel legs". What will you do?

5. You see a person who is unusually small. What will you do?

All these 5 cases share one thing in common. They are not the 'normal' thing you used to see daily. You are not used to them.

So the answer to all of them will be "Take a second look"

Now why the 5th one alone troubles you? If you want to change the answer to 5th one alone, then you are trying to 'condition' him in a different way. In a objective view all 5 cases are same! You expect people to behave "differently" in the 5th one! That is a 'deviation' from human nature!

If you say, for all 5 questions we should not take a second look, well then you are asking me to leave off all my curiosity. Curiosity is human nature! Observe a baby! Anything different will attract the baby's attention! That is the way you are supposed to live!

<i>I agree.</i>

We should be conditioned to avoid taking a second look in the 5th case.

<i>I Disagree</i>
The 5th case is no special and taking second look is definitely normal human behaviour. Nothing peculiar in it as you think.

Second looks are not reserved for those who are differently abled. Second looks come by for many other reasons too. Just how fat are you, and how did you manage so much of acne!! Gawd! I have been there and done that. But today I am in a different phase. A phase where I am fast loosing friends, as one would loose hair under stress. I could do with ...
I just happen to have written a short essay on my own blog about the high likelihood of any one person one meets (you including, no offense) being an idiot. The issue of idiots and how to deal with them is of the utmost importance... though as you might be able to tell, I find my proposal more on the proactive side than yours.

You bet!!!
Run to your first love..
I did, I am doing, I will soon run away further...

Its that feeling this post of yours leaves behind...that I will now trace for a long time...It is very important, that one does only what one loves to do..Like in your previous posts..

My first love was to become an astronaut, but I let go of it, due to reasons over which I had no control..Again a second time I was given an opportunity, to take it up but lost again as I had no control......I let it be there..
But I also liked zillion other things and all of them were tempting enuf to be my first love...

Journalism became stronger a dream when astronaut was rotting away...I'm there amongst all, but not yet there...But I now am after this love...ever since....and
your question
Do you know how difficult is to find yourself in the company of people who are disconnected from you emotionally by age?
I couldnt relate to it better....never..!

You are right absolutely.
Told ya ur writing is addictive to people like me!

As Soms said, let me say my story in short.
1. I love maths from childhood. No doubt.
2. But my parents want me to be a Doctor (earlier it was lawyer - because I used to argue a lot - then it got changed in the middle. Ask my mom or dad for why they changed it. So I sincerely took Bio group (in fact if there was a pure Bio group, I would have chosen that! What a tragedy it would have been) and studied.
3. When I realized there is no place for 'maths' in MBBS, I dropped the plan of doing MBBS.
4. I joined BE-CSE just to have the fun of Computers and the Math classes (I was told there will be maths upto 5th Semester).
5. Then I realized that my passion for maths is not 'exactly' full of maths, but a specific area of it and it is there in Algorithms, Number Theory, etc.

So finally I came back to my starting place and I am happy.

Now you are writing similar blogs for a long time, but what have you done about it?
Either,
1. You work in secrecy
2. You don't work at all.
Both are bad :)

One of the things that I have realized is, many of us aren't very sure whether what we like doing now is really the one that we want to take up as profession. That doubt/scare stops us from making a bold decision. I have experienced it and I have no shame in sharing it because I feel it was a learning experience.

During 10th std, I decided that medicine is my profession and chose bio group in 11th. During 11th, I got to know more information about the profession and realized that is not what I really wanted to do.

During 12th, gazing at the skies fascinated me. I decided that I'll one day become a great scientist in the field of astronomy and started collecting more information about the astronomy courses offered in India. My parents were so good that they tried reaching all their contacts to gather information for me. When I came to know more about the profession, the idea was 'gone with the wind'.

During college days, I liked coaching. I was part of a leadership coaching company and was part of their sessions coaching close to 500 students. But this time, I was very cautious. I didn't want to decide in a haste and take that up as a profession. After college, I spent few months coaching people, starting my own brand. I tasted success but I realized, I would enjoy coaching as a hobby but not a profession.

So, the point is, it is not every of your childhood interest can become a profession. It is very important that we distinguish our short term interests and our real passion. And I think it takes time to realize your passion. But, once you have realized, then it is important that we make the switch. While we advise people to chase their dreams, it is equally important that we educate people on how to differentiate between passion and short term interests.

This is what my friend Hariharan an Expert continous partial as well as a cool polymath had to say when I was discussing with him regarding this.Could sound abit vulgar .you can delete it if its too bad.

"it comes down to theperson...most would prefer a string ofone night stands rather be tied down toone girl....that dosent mean that thetrend continues lifelong...when i see areally happily married couple truly inlove with each other, i would feel maybeeven i should find that someone and getsettled...pretty much the same way youfeel when you see a real expert on asubject....but then someone said"those who fail to write science, end upwriting about science"...notsure how exactly true it is....does that meanthose who have superflousknowledge on a lot of subjects do so because they werefailures in any onespecific field which they had liked earlier??? its difficultto conclude thatway too...take sujatha or mano for instance....guess its twodifferent kinds ofpeople...and the grass is greener on the other side story.and about thepolymath and continuos partial stuff...i feel they are just differentextensions along the same spectrum...im sure a polymath would not be as good insomething compared to a person who has done only that thing for his whole life.

Just as guy A feels bad abt not able to experience the importance of the gibbsparticle in the "bowels" of quantum mechanics like the quantum mechgod B, im sure B would feel something similar when A recognizes "sweet child of mine" just from the lead in a rock concertattended by A,B and the hot chick C. And if B dosent feel bad, its not becausehe is an expert in quantum mechanics greater than A, its because he knows themeaning of life....which anybody can know ...and according to me is theonly thing worth knowing for true happiness".

In the field of work that I am, I need to be Generalist to be successful. For things that are close to my heart, I tend to learn more about it everyday. Someday I will be a specialist in that field. On the other hand, I might get bored of these as well and might end up not being a specialist in any field at all.

If I apply the 80-20 rule, the world will work with 20% specialist and 80% Generalist.

That is exactly what I've been advocating all along. The day when PHD's actualy meant something are gone (along with BELL Labs) .. and thats exactly where Google and Wikipedia come into play. Knowledge in the cloud which has commoditized it. and this commoditization happened thanks to the WWW and Wikipedia and the day anything gets commoditized everybody gains. All the more reason why our brains need to be directly hooked up into Google and Wikipedia. Well we are almost there though.. a phone with 3G and a good browser is one step in that direction..

oh btw, the business world knows "Polymaths vs Continous Partials" as Generalists and Specialists. :-)

I am looking forward to your posts on continuous partial knowledge. I do look at this as FULL engagement... or not. Sometimes appropriate not to have full engagement, but sometimes much better to fully engage. I am in the midst of writing about continuous partial eating, continuous partial snacking, continuous partial driving, continuous partial parenting -- I'm sure you're getting the idea... a continuous partial lifestyle that I'm calling: continuous partial everything. Did not have knowledge in the mix, though. Cheers.

Methnks sometimes eyes need to be pried open a little more forcefully. Nothing is quite so frustrating as an encounter with one who refuses to see. "Don't confuse me with the facts," they shout. "My mind is made up." Such blind faith seems a rebuttle of God's will. I feel quite certan God would prefer us to use our God-given ability to reason, rather than stumble blindly alone when new truths are revealed.

I agree with your argument that 'atheism' is a Yet Another Belief System.

But that does not mean, reading/listening to contents written/spoken by people on the other side is a 'Waste of time'.

I think we need to discuss about 'Waste of Time' one day (if you are open for discussions which don't seem to happen nowadays).

Perhaps we may need to relook the example. A person with little or no experience with Swing cannot perhaps google code and do with a programming job over three weeks. In my personal opinion, Benny must be a genius to be able to make the mark. And that he is able to pick and paste a job for three weeks will certainly make him much more technically sound in the end. This may not exactly lead to fewer defects, but will surely lead to a higher average defect turnaround time. It may also leave the project looking like a PoC. Further development (even a CR) and enhancements may require a complete relook from the architecture perspective.

So if youre newbie to Swing or with basic knowledge, it is much more advisable to start like Ashish and work like Benny. There cannot be one person who we may need to idealize. Approaches are not different for any project. It is the balancing that is! So having a take on that is what is left to the project manager, the management :P. And to aid him in the process of doing that would be his understanding of the subject i.e., Swing and of course the project deadlines, SLA, etc.

It is also certainly wrong to pick Benny as suitable for services, while Ashish might do good for research. Services is not a poor cousin to research. Researchers are also not exactly the gods as far as coding and inventions go. Lets remember to not mix attitudes with methodologies. What researchers are looking for are breakthroughs, discoveries. It requires services to sustain such research methodologies. Its like almost cheese and chalk as far as intentions go. Going with the Google work culture as an example, research may not be a separate line of work too!

As far as only learning a new language goes, it is what you want to learn. You can learn in bits and pieces as is required or you can go all out and get all the basics right first.

Hi,
I like the token system. It is something new I am reading and it should be a good system. But only if it is implemented without keeping VOTES in mind.

Nice solution.

I will do what Benny will do although I prefer to do as Ashish did. When time is short and everyone including your manager is sitting on your head, you cannot start with alphabets. "Getting the work done" is most important phrase in the dictionary of a company. And I need not to be automobile engineer to learn driving irrespective of timeline :-)

We do have our fire-fighters in our company but I am not sure whether we have them in our unit. They make it happen. They live the life of heroes always. You cannot blame them for your incompetancy. It is like killing intelligent people for just you not having enough intelligence :)
